African Rest Camps

Accommodation in National Parks and public wildlife Reserves is designed to mainly cater for the self-guided and self-catered guests. Some facilities are very modest but provide basic cooking, ablution, laundry and safe accommodation.

Overview of Rest Camps

Most rest camps offer a range of accommodation from camping, to basic huts and rondavels, fully equipped family units, private lodges with a personal chef and guide, fully catered hotel style hospitality for tour groups and independent travellers.
Rest camps are located within the parks and adhere to strict rules and gate times. Some camps are fenced and offer safety from wild animals and limited supplies. The larger rest camps are equipped with a fuel station, simple mechanical services, a supply store for food and curios, al la cartel restaurant and buffet style catering. Recently much of the catering has been outsourced to well-known local franchise restaurant brands.
Gone are the old days of hunters and explorers, Stanley and Livingstone, the old British older, the gold rush, diamond rush, the scramble for territories and imperial rule and wars.

A time when grand colonial hotels were the centre of social landscapes; international hubs of trade, influential people and visiting dignitaries.

Most camps are run by a manager and staff who offer various activities which add great value to the stay in the park. Guided bush walks with armed rangers, Safari drives in open vehicles, night drives, special talks and interpretive field museums and great value to the visitors stay.
Some of the larger rest camps have integrated private safari operator services, offering hosted Safaris and full catering but utilize the standard rest camp accommodation. Rest camps are usually located near rivers or hilltops, offering beautiful surroundings with large trees and park-like settings. Animal viewing hides and short nature trails are some self-guided activities on offer.
